Arranger/Orchestrator

My first arrangement was the Theme from Ghostbusters for my high school pep band.  Back then I thought sax and horn transposed the same.  That was quite the surprise!  After writing hundreds of brass arrangements I started venturing into orchestral, choral and rock arranging.  I have since served as arranger and orchestrator for numerous shows, musicals and concerts.  The following are some of my favorites.

  • Play Academic Festival OvertureAcademic Festival OvertureAcademic Festival Overture

For the past few years I have been asked by Adam Frey to write a major arrangement for the International Euphonium Institute (IEI).  This work is for 4 euphoniums and 4 tubas.  I tried to capture as much of the original Brahms as possible.

  • Play Bruckner FantasyBruckner FantasyBruckner Fantasy

This arrangement features themes from various Bruckner symphonies.  Also written for the IEI, again using 4 euphoniums and 4 tubas.

  • Play March Op. 99March Op. 99March Op. 99

Starting in high school and for almost 20 years I was the tuba player and staff arranger for the Encore Brass Quintet.  This was one of the most difficult charts, and one of my favorites!

  • Play Bugler's HolidayBugler's HolidayBugler's Holiday

The Midwest Brassworks is a large brass ensemble that I formed in 2013 and serve as conductor and arranger.  Normally for three trumpets with ensemble, I decided we should feature all four players and expanded the chart.

  • Play First Suite in E FlatFirst Suite in E FlatFirst Suite in E Flat

One of the first works for the modern wind ensemble, this piece translates well to large brass ensemble.  The excerpts are from a concert by the Ars Nova Chamber Orchestra Brass.

  • Play The ScriptThe ScriptThe Script

After working together on a viral video project in the recent past I was contacted by the Denver Philharmonic to score the accompaniment for vocal soloist Mandy Harvey and pianist Derek Amato.  This original work is haunting and lovely.

  • Play Flower DuetFlower DuetFlower Duet

Horn can be one of the most beautiful instruments, and two horns is exquisite.  This duet is one of the greatest lyric works in the repertoire and makes a wonderful vehicle to showcase the amazing horns of the Midwest Brassworks.

  • Play Norwegian Rustic MarchNorwegian Rustic MarchNorwegian Rustic March

A jaunty romp through the Scandinavian countryside.  A gorgeous flugelhorn solo with the Midwest Brassworks.

  • Play Pop MedleyPop MedleyPop Medley

Never let it be said that Midwest Brassworks is behind the times.  Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus sound better on the original brass.

  • Play Montegues and CapuletsMontegues and CapuletsMontegues and Capulets

Serge Prokofiev made a powerful statement in his depiction of these famous families.  A tour de force for low brass in a wonderful performance by the Ars Nova Chamber Orchestra Brass!

  • Play Star WarsStar WarsStar Wars

Modern action movies just would not be the same without the powerful soundtracks.  This performance by the Ars Nova Chamber Orchestra Brass gives me chills every time.

  • Play Stars and Stripes Forever and EverStars and Stripes Forever and EverStars and Stripes Forever and Ever

This great Sousa march has served as the encore for numerous concerts over the years.  I decided to turn it into a final feature for each section of the Midwest Brassworks.  This is but a short excerpt.

  • Play SuperThemesSuperThemesSuperThemes

From Saturday morning cartoons to the big screen, the world has become obsessed with super heroes.  And from this obsession comes some really great themes!

  • Play MarchMarchMarch

Paul Hindemith has a long association with brass players, from solo works to fantastic sections in band and orchestra.  The Ars Nova Chamber Orchestra Brass show that no strings or woodwinds are necessary.

  • Play Finale from Shostakovich 5th SymphonyFinale from Shostakovich 5th SymphonyFinale from Shostakovich 5th Symphony

One of the most difficult arrangements I have ever done, spectaculary performed by the Boston Conservatory Brass Ensemble under the direction of Larry Isaacson.

  • Play The Wizard of OzThe Wizard of OzThe Wizard of Oz

This show holds a special place in my heart.  I had the privilege of serving as music director with a tremendous youth arts organization, and this was my first show with them.  This chart is performed by the Ars Nova Chamber Orchestra Brass.

  • Play Xylophone RagXylophone RagXylophone Rag

When you have a talent like Josh Strange in your ensemble you have to find a way to feature him.  Here he is with the Midwest Brassworks.

  • Play Beautiful OhioBeautiful OhioBeautiful Ohio

The Central Ohio Symphony was looking for a fresh take on this state standard.  With the lilting feel of the original tune it seemed apt to think Strauss.

  • Play Praise the Lord with Drums and CymbalsPraise the Lord with Drums and CymbalsPraise the Lord with Drums and Cymbals

I first encountered this piece in an arrangement for brass quintet and organ.  I was delighted when I was asked by Dr. Selmer Spitzer of the Southern Nevada Symphony to arrange this for organ and orchestra.

  • Play American PatrolAmerican PatrolAmerican Patrol

When you think of Americana you cannot help but have a tune like this running through your head.  A live performance by the Ars Nova Chamber Orchestra Brass.

"Mr. Olt's original arrangement of Bells of St. Michael for The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra was stunning. It possesses brilliant orchestration, inventive use of counter melody and a thrilling finish. His arrangement was a centerpiece of The Pops 2014 Florida Tour, and has become a staple of our holiday programming in Cincinnati."

John Morris Russell
Conductor, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra

"Tim Olt is a long time friend and absolutely first class arranger. He has presented master classes at Eastman on arranging and with his college brass ensemble. I look forward to having more commissions from him."

Don Harry                                                Tuba Professor, Eastman School of Music

"I am very impressed with the speed, response and quality to our need for this music."

Warren Hyer                                    Executive Director, Central Ohio Symphony

"WOW!  What a genius.....  When I listened to it I got tears in my eyes.  Job well done."

Dr. Selmer Spitzer                         Conductor, Southern Nevada Symphony
